Advocates will now receive automated notifications regarding case filings, and members of the bar will promptly receive cause lists via WhatsApp messages, as stated by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud during a recent announcement. This move marks a milestone in the Supreme Court’s efforts to enhance accessibility and transparency in the judicial process. With the integration of WhatsApp messaging services into its IT infrastructure, the Supreme Court aims to streamline communication and empower stakeholders in the legal community. CJI emphasized the significance of this initiative, highlighting its potential to revolutionize daily work practices and contribute to environmental conservation by reducing paper usage. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta lauded the move as another revolutionary step in the digitization of judicial operations. Furthermore, Justice Chandrachud provided the official WhatsApp number of the Supreme Court, clarifying that it will serve solely for broadcasting messages and will not accept incoming calls or messages. Under his guidance, the Supreme Court has been actively pursuing the digitization of judicial processes, with significant government funding allocated to the e-court project. “In the 75th year of its existence, the Supreme Court of India launched a small initiative. It has the potential to have a big-bang impact. Whatsapp messenger has been a ubiquitous service in our daily lives and has taken the role of a powerful communication tool. To strengthen the right to access to Justice and enhance transparency in the judicial system, the Supreme Court announces integration of Whatsapp messaging services with its IT services,” CJI Chandrachud said.
Transformative potential of this new initiative by the SC
The Chief Justice explained that this integration will enable automated WhatsApp updates for Advocates on Record and parties regarding electronic filing, cause lists, and orders/judgments. These updates will be triggered upon successful case filing and will also include notifications about objections raised by the registry. Cause lists will be disseminated to all members of the bar as soon as they are published, and orders/judgments available on the website will be shared via WhatsApp. The communication through the Supreme Court’s official WhatsApp number (876 876 76) will be one-way only. The Chief Justice expressed optimism about the transformative potential of this service, highlighting its role in changing daily work habits and contributing to environmental conservation by reducing paper usage. Justice Chandrachud underscored some more positive effects this service could bring, such as altering daily work routines and contributing to environmental conservation by reducing paper usage. Under this initiative, Advocates-on-Record and Parties in Person will receive automated messages concerning electronic filing, cause lists, orders, and judgments. Members of the Bar and Registry officials will promptly receive cause lists upon publication, while stakeholders will also receive orders and judgments on their mobile devices, in addition to accessing them through the website.
